Move pages from Layout Builder to DXPR Builder

You rebuild each Layout Builder page in a DXPR Builder field while the old layout stays online. At the end, editors change the page on the page itself instead of on the Layout screen. No tool converts Layout Builder layouts, so plan time per page. To keep Layout Builder for the page frame instead, see Layout Builder coexistence.

Before you start

  • DXPR Builder is installed and your product key is saved, see General settings.
  • You can manage the fields and the display of the content type.
  • Every page of the content type counts as a content item once its display uses the DXPR Builder formatter. Check your limit on the Content Items tab.

Set up

  1. Go to Structure > Content types (/admin/structure/types) and click Manage fields for the content type.
  2. Add a field: choose Formatted text, then Long text, for example "Page content".
  3. Click Manage display, then Manage layout.
  4. Click Add block where the page content belongs and pick the new field.
  5. Set Formatter to DXPR Builder, add the block and click Save layout.
  6. Pages with a layout of their own do not follow the default layout. On each of them, open the Layout tab and add the field the same way.

Rebuild each page

  1. Open the page. The empty DXPR Builder field shows next to the old blocks.
  2. Rebuild the structure with Section and Row from the Layout tab of the element picker. The table below maps each Layout Builder part.
  3. Copy the text of the old blocks into Text elements.
  4. Add the images again with Image elements.
  5. Click Save on the DXPR Builder toolbar.
Layout Builder DXPR Builder
Section with one column Section
Section with two, three or four columns Row with the same number of columns
Inline block Text, Image or another element from the Content tab
Reusable custom block The block on the Drupal Blocks tab
Views block The view on the Drupal Views tab

If many pages share a structure, save the first rebuilt page as a template and insert it on the others.

Finish the move

  1. On each page with its own layout, open Layout and click Revert to defaults. This removes the old layout and its inline blocks; the new field keeps its content.
  2. Open Manage layout of the content type, remove the old blocks and click Save layout.

To stop using Layout Builder for the content type, untick Use Layout Builder on Manage display. Drupal warns that all customisations will be removed. Then set the Format of the new field to DXPR Builder in the field list.

What you see

Each page shows its content from the DXPR Builder field. Editors with the Edit with DXPR Builder permission see the editing controls on the page and save from the DXPR Builder toolbar. The Content items tab lists every page of the content type.

If you don't see the editor

  • Use Layout Builder cannot be unticked. Some pages still have a layout of their own. Click Revert to defaults on their Layout tab first.
  • The new field is missing on some pages. Those pages have their own layout. Add the field on their Layout tab.
  • The field shows, but no editing controls. Your account lacks the Edit with DXPR Builder permission, or your licence limits are reached. See Licence and product key errors.
  • Old content shows next to the new. The old blocks are still in the layout. Remove them as described under Finish the move.
