Edit text on the page

You can type and format text right on the page, without opening the settings dialog. Click the text of a Text, Alert or Block quote element and a small toolbar appears above it. Use this for quick changes to wording and formatting. The example makes one word bold and adds a sentence to a paragraph.

Edit text on the page

  1. Click the text on the page. The editor toolbar appears above it.
  2. Double-click a word to select it, then click Bold in the toolbar.
  3. Click where you want to add words and type.
  4. Click outside the text to stop editing.
  5. Click Save on the toolbar to store the page.

A button's label and a progress bar's label also change in place, without a toolbar.

Toolbar buttons

Your user profile decides which buttons the toolbar shows. These are all the buttons it can have, by the names their tooltips show:

Button What it does
Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough Emphasise the selected words
Remove Format Clears the formatting of the selection
Heading Turns a paragraph into a heading, or back
Styles Applies a text style from your theme
Font Size, Font Color, Font Background Color Size and colour of the selected words
Align left, Align center, Align right, Justify Alignment of the paragraph
Bulleted List, Numbered List Turn paragraphs into a list
Link Adds or edits a link
Insert image, Insert table Put an image or a table inside the text
Source Shows the HTML, to edit it directly
Undo, Redo Step back or forward in this text

When AI is set up, the toolbar starts with two more buttons. AI Agent lists commands that rewrite the selected text, and Tone of voice rewrites it in the tone you pick. See AI text commands.

Paste text from elsewhere

Text pasted from Word or a web page keeps its formatting, including its own colours and fonts. To paste the words only, press Ctrl+Shift+V (Cmd+Shift+V on a Mac). Add pictures with an Image element rather than pasting them into the text.

What you see

While you edit, the toolbar floats above the text. The changes show at once, exactly as visitors will see them. When you click outside, the toolbar closes and a dot on the Save button shows that the page has unsaved changes.

If you don't see the toolbar

  • Clicking the text does nothing. The page is in Preview mode, where text cannot be edited. Click the eye icon on the DXPR toolbar and choose Edit.
  • A button you need is missing. Your user profile leaves it out. An administrator ticks it under Text editor buttons (inline editing) at /admin/dxpr_studio/dxpr_builder/profile; see Text editor customisation.
  • Your changes are gone after a reload. A click outside the text does not save the page. Click Save on the DXPR toolbar before you leave.
  • Pasted text looks different from the rest of the page. It brought its own styles along. Press Ctrl+Z, then paste again with Ctrl+Shift+V.
