Use DXPR Builder inside Layout Builder

Let Layout Builder set the frame of a content type, and give your editors DXPR Builder for the content inside it. At the end, you have fixed fields around the main area, and editors build freely in the middle. Moving away from Layout Builder? See From Layout Builder.

Before you start

  • The Layout Builder module is enabled.
  • The text field of your content type already uses the DXPR Builder format; see Installing on existing content types. Layout Builder keeps that format when you switch it on.

Set up

  1. Go to Structure > Content types (/admin/structure/types) and click Manage display for your content type.
  2. Under Layout options, tick Use Layout Builder and click Save.
  3. Click Manage layout.
  4. Hover the Body block, open its pencil menu and choose Configure.
  5. Check that Formatter is DXPR Builder and click Update.
  6. Arrange the other blocks around it and click Save layout.

What you see

Open a content item of that type. Layout Builder shows its sections, and the field in the middle shows the DXPR Builder toolbar when you hover it. Editors build in that field as on any other page.

You can also add a free area to one section. With the DXPR Builder Block Type submodule enabled, choose Add block > Create content block in Manage layout. Pick Drag and Drop Block if a list of block types appears. Editors then build its content with DXPR Builder on the page.

If you don't see the editor

  • The field shows plain text without a toolbar. The Body block in the layout uses another formatter. In Manage layout, choose Configure on the block and set Formatter to DXPR Builder.
  • One content item still shows the old format. It has its own layout, saved before you switched. Open its Layout tab and click Revert to defaults.
  • The toolbar is missing for one editor. The editor lacks the Edit with DXPR Builder permission. Grant it under People > Permissions (/admin/people/permissions).
