Copy and paste elements
You can copy any element and paste a duplicate on the same page, so you never build the same button or card twice. Use the keyboard or the More menu. To reuse an element on other pages, save it as a template instead. The example copies a Learn more button and pastes the copy right below it.
Copy an element with the keyboard
- Click the element's name in its control bar to select it, then press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac) to copy it.
- Press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac). The copy appears right after the selected element.
- Click the eye icon on the DXPR toolbar and choose Preview to check the result.
- Choose Edit in the same menu to return to editing.
- Click Save to store the page.
To paste somewhere else, select the element the copy should follow, then press Ctrl+V. Select the name in the control bar, not the text: a click on the text starts text editing.
Every way to copy
Hover an element and click More, the three dots in its control bar, to find the same actions as menu entries. Each entry shows its keyboard shortcut on the right.
| Action | Keyboard | In the More menu |
|---|---|---|
| Copy | Ctrl+C | On everything except columns |
| Cut | Ctrl+X | On elements that hold no other elements; not on sections, rows, columns, Tabs, Collapse panel, Carousel, Card, Panel, Jumbotron, Link, Positioned layers or their parts |
| Paste | Ctrl+V: after a selected element; inside, at the top, on a selected section, column or other part that holds elements | On sections, columns, single tabs, carousel slides, Collapse panel toggles, Card, Panel, Jumbotron, Link and Positioned layers: inside, at the top |
| Clone | Ctrl+D | On everything except columns and carousel slides: the copy lands right after the original |
Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X and Ctrl+D work wherever the More menu offers the matching entry, so Ctrl+C also copies a selected section or row. On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl. To repeat a whole section, clone it, because a pasted section lands inside the selected section; see Duplicate an element with Clone.
The clipboard holds one item and empties when the page reloads. To use an element on other pages, choose Save as template in its More menu; see User templates.
What you see
The copy appears right after the original, with the same content, settings and style. A dot on the Save button shows that the page has unsaved changes. Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) to remove the copy again.
If you don't see the copy
- Nothing happens when you press Ctrl+V. The clipboard is empty because the page was reloaded since you copied. Copy the element again, then paste.
- Text is pasted instead of the element. You clicked into the element's text, so the keys work on that text. Click outside the element, then click its name in the control bar and copy again.
- Ctrl+V pastes a different element. Clone also uses the clipboard, so a clone after your copy replaces it. Copy the element again just before you paste.
- A pasted section ends up inside another section. Pasting on a section puts the copy inside it. Press Ctrl+Z, then clone the section instead.
- There is no Paste in the More menu. Only parts that hold elements have it: sections, columns, single tabs, carousel slides, Collapse panel toggles, Card, Panel, Jumbotron, Link and Positioned layers. Rows, Tabs, Collapse panel and Carousel do not. Select an element and press Ctrl+V to paste after it.
What's next?
- Duplicate an element with Clone: repeat a section or element right after itself.
- Drag and drop elements: move the copy to another column or section.
- Use the element More menu: every other action on an element.
- Undo and redo: step back when a paste goes wrong.
