Installation

Requirements

  • Drupal 10.3 or later, or Drupal 11.
  • The core Media module.
  • Media Thumbnails 1.x or 2.x.
  • Editors use a browser that can play the site's video formats. The frame is drawn from an HTML5 <video> element, so a format the browser cannot play cannot be captured.

Install the module

composer require drupal/media_thumbnails_client_video
drush en media_thumbnails_client_video

Composer also installs Media Thumbnails, and enabling the module enables it and Media.

Private file system

Captured frames wait in private://media_thumbnails_client_video/ until their media item is saved, or in temporary://media_thumbnails_client_video/ on sites without a private file system. Each user has their own directory.

A private file system is recommended when the site runs on more than one web server. The browser sends the frame in one request and the media item is saved in another, which may reach a different server. The temporary directory is usually local to each server, so the frame would not be found. See Public and private files to set $settings['file_private_path'].

Uninstalling

Uninstalling the module deletes frames that were never claimed. Thumbnails that media items already use are ordinary files and stay. Media Thumbnails then handles video media with whatever other plugin is installed, or not at all.
