Finding a new project owner or new maintainers
If you are maintaining a project, and you would like to collaborate with other members of the community, you could team up with maintainers. If, for some reason, you are not able to maintain the project any longer, you could find a new project owner to whom transfer the whole project.
Strategies for finding new maintainers
- Set the Maintenance status project field to Seeking new maintainer. Edit the Development status field too, if necessary.
- Change the project page to announce you are looking for a new maintainer.
- Create an issue in your project queue, announcing that you are looking for a new maintainer.
- Possibly, contact people who consistently post issues or patches for your project in the queue and use their contact tab to ask if they are interested in maintaining the project.
Adding new maintainers
If you find somebody who can be added as new maintainer, and you have the Administer maintainers permission, you can grant them the maintainer status. Otherwise, ask the person you are accepting as maintainer to create a request in the Drupal.org project maintainership issue queue, and add a comment in that issue saying that you (as maintainer of the project) accept the request.
Transferring project ownership
If you want to transfer the ownership of a project you own to a specific community member or organization, open an issue in the Drupal.org project maintainership issue queue using Transfer ownership of <project-name> to <username> as title. (Replace <project-name> with the project name as it appears in the project page, and <username> with the username that appears in the user profile.) In the issue:
- Add a link to the project page
- Add a link to the user profile for the person you want to make the new project owner
- State whether the user account is an organization / shared account or an individual account
- State whether you intend to continue as maintainer
Giving up a project
If you are a project owner who is no longer capable of maintaining a project, and you have not found a new project owner or maintainer:
- Set the project status to unmaintained; add a note to the project page that says the project needs a new maintainer and that you leave the project.
- (Preferably) Open an issue in the Drupal.org project maintainership issue queue using
Abandoning <project-name>as title, asking to be removed as project owner of that project, and providing a link to the project. (Replace<project-name>with the project name as it appears in the project page.) Project moderators will change the project owner to Unsupported Projects, which is the account used to mark a project as unsupported. - (Alternatively, instead of what reported on point 2) Edit the project page to declare you leave to project moderators the decisions on adding new maintainers or changing the project owner. Please, do not create an issue in the Drupal.org project maintainership issue queue, as previously suggested; that issue would not be visible to the interested people.
